MISTER ATLAS
Although citing Hip-Hop artists from Queens, NY as having the most cultural impact, the New Jersey native Mister Atlas was inspired to create by the Bed-Stuy Brooklyn M.C. known as Big Daddy Kane in 1987. “East Orange General Hospital where I was born, in the state of New Jersey, October ’74. Self-esteem was uplifted by the brother who scripted ‘Raw’. Perfect prescription: my perspective’s conflicted no more. Peace To The God King Asiatic Nobody’s Equal…” Mister Atlas professes in the song entitled ‘Now, Nation Or End’.
His earliest recollections of Hip-Hop are from 1981/82 via The Sugarhill Gang and Afrika Bambaataa & The SoulSonic Force. In the years to come to be followed by the likes of Run-DMC, The Treacherous 3, LL Cool J, B.D.P. Rakim & Kool G. Rap.
Musical compositions have always been a love of mine. My Parents played music from The Brothers Johnsons, Roy Ayers, Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Doug & Jean Cam, Steely Dan, Michael Jackson, Prince, etc., Besides hearing Big Daddy Kane on “Just Rhymin with Biz’ once, I heard ‘Raw’ & saw the visual for ‘Ain’t No Half Steppin’ is when I decided to start my creative process a little more seriously.
Fast forward to the present day, Mister Atlas is also known as Coach Atlas, a strength coach (16 years) who now merges his passion for health and wellness with music. Whether it’s storytelling or concepts pertaining to food, history, exercising, and or socio-politics. “Music can be utilized as a vehicle of consciousness”. -Angela Davis
